This interview was conducted in French and a brief translation is given below: apologies to all those who don't speak french; however if you do enjoy...
Dr Christopher says: Cameroon has a problem of very weak institutions. It is only in Cameroon that you will find the president of the national assembly going to see off and welcome the president of the republic each time he is going or returning from trips abroad. According to Dr Fomunyoh, this is a clear indication of the power the executive exerts over the legislative arm which should be an independent institution.
Dr Chris also expressed his frustration at how ridiculous and shameful the Cameroon democracy is to him as a Cameroonian and expert. Under his leadership at the NDI in the Africa region, with his team, he successfully helped and established democratic systems in many African nations. As such, he feels a heavy load on his shoulders when unable to do the same in his own country of origin (Cameroon).
He went on to give examples of other African nations as benchmark demonstration of how well they have made progress in their democratic system as compared to Cameroon and noted: these nations are far less privileged than Cameroon in terms of many mineral resources, strong population leading a strong domestic market and intellectual citizens.
He used the case of the Gabonese President: Ali Bongo Ondimba who got to power legitimately and told his nation he will make the country an emerging one by 2025. Another legitimate case used was the president of Ivory Cost: Alassane Ouattara; when he came to power, also promised his nation to make it an emerging one by 2020.
But when describing the sad case of Cameroon; the scenario of 2011 speech from the Head of State, (which was the "suppose" last mandate of this ruling president reigning since 1982), where his Excellency confidently promised his nation he will make it an emerging one by 2035; and the audience clapped in appreciation. Dr Christopher Fomunyoh as an expert in the field finds this ridiculously unreasonable, unsound, and incongruous to believe anyone will consciously find such as valid...!
Therefore, if no result of leadership is evident after 31 years, how much is still to be achieved in the next 22 years to come?! perhaps under the same leadership...!!?
He stressed saying, this is why when ever African countries are listed in terms of their developments, achievements, prospects and progresses, Cameroon will never feature in such list or be short listed.....
