The cause of Goldie Harvey’s death has been identified as “Pulmonary Embolism” by the hospital (Reddington Hospital) where she died. More explanation on this illness after the cut........
A pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood clot in the body’s circulatory system breaks free and passes into the arteries of the lungs. The clot can then block fresh, oxygen-rich blood from reaching the cells of the lungs, which can cause serious lung damage, injury or even death.
Several studies in the past two years have suggested that vaginal ring contraceptives like NuvaRing may increase the risk of blood clots, which can lead to dangerous and painful conditions such as NuvaRing pulmonary embolism.
Although pulmonary embolism can occur naturally, researchers have discovered that the chemical hormones in NuvaRing can increase the risks of blood clots and related conditions like NuvaRing pulmonary embolism by as much as 90% over traditional contraceptives.
It is important for anyone suffering a pulmonary embolism to receive treatment as soon as possible. Some of the common symptoms include:
Chest pain
Lightheadedness or fainting
Excessive sweating
Coughing or wheezing
Shortness of breath
Weak pulse
Clammy or bluish-colored skin
Rapid or irregular heartbeat
So far, the FDA has received more than 1,000 reports of side effects like this among women using NuvaRing. Many women have also filed a lawsuit for dangerous side effects such as NuvaRing pulmonary embolism and NuvaRing deaths have been reported.
If you or a loved one suffered a blood clot or pulmonary embolism after using a NuvaRing device, you may be entitled to substantial compensation. It is important to speak with a lawyer about your legal options. Contact us today.
In 2011, the FDA published a widespread study of women using contraceptives which found that vaginal rings like NuvaRing could raise the risk of blood clots by as much as 56% over traditional low-dose estrogen birth control pills.
In May of 2012, the British Medical Journal released a new study from Denmark which also found that vaginal ring contraceptives could increase the chances of blood clots by as much as 90% over oral contraceptives.
Most recently, the New England Journal of Medicine published research from Europe on June 14, 2012 which confirmed prior results, finding vaginal rings could heighten blood clot risks by 2 ½ to 3 times over birth control pills, or 6 times over the risk of no hormone use.
With more than 1,000 patients filing lawsuits for NuvaRing injuries, cases have been moved to a special federal court in Missouri. Those trials are scheduled to begin in early 2013 if no settlement is reached. However, lawyers are still helping those affected file claims.
A judge recently ordered that Merck will have to make certain evidence public which may show they knew of risks such as NuvaRing pulmonary embolism, but did not properly warn those women using the devices.
Lawyers are available to help those affected find out whether they qualify for a case and how long they have to take action. Before choosing any lawyer, however, make sure they are qualified for this type of lawsuit and have experience fighting large drug companies.
The DrugRisk Resource Center only recommends law firms that specialize in NuvaRing lawsuits.
