Victor Ebai: What is SQL: Empowering initiative from a Cameroonian

By Nadine. T

By failing to take advantage of the 21st century technological advances, Cameroon has continuously missed out on the opportunity to foster a sustainable national economy and not earning its competitive place in this era of globalization. Though the lack of leadership at national level is static, there is no doubt it is speeding intra-personally among its citizens. Cameroonian's have shown crucial initiatives by demonstrating they have resourceful capabilities to cope with the world’s fast technological evolution.

Cameroon born Victor Ebai is allowing you to learn from his experience of more than one decade with his new book: What is SQL? Victor is an established Business Intelligence consultant with several years’ experience in the business intelligence industry, covering database, report, data warehouse, and SQL development. Victor was educated in the United Kingdom, where he currently resides and works.

Are you a company owner? Do you plan to conduct a business in future or do you study SQL in a computing course? Are you starting your career in a business field? Or do you have to study SQL in college/university? So, you have to be familiar with SQL, because there is a high demand for SQL expertise. But why do we use SQL? Before answering this question we should be clear about the content of SQL.

We are aware and we agree that trivial activities such as the use of Internet or the ATM or the purchase of grocery are responsible for the aggregation of vast amounts of data, which are exponentially growing. Without databases you would not be able to organise or coordinate the data in a manner that enables an organisation to achieve a soft and structured information flow. Most database operations from updating, deleting, and requesting information from databases are all based on SQL statements. Structured Query Language is a widely used language for database programming described and explained in detail in Victor Ebai´s book What is SQL?

Any beginners should benefit from his book What is SQL? In contrast to other SQL books, Ebai´s book implies the business context emphasising why and when certain SQL statements should be applied. Additionally, it distinguishes itself from standard books by closely looking at few critical nonstandard business intelligence requirements such as verification, validation and correction concerns or the manipulation of duplicate row.

As reader, you need not to be afraid of special terminology. Ebai summarises the basics focusing on main terminology such as Database Management Systems or T-SQL. This theoretical framework is the fundamental packed in a logic chronology you find in chapter 1 and chapter 2. For beginners it is inevitable to enjoy both chapters providing advanced reading. The core terms explained here easily are the bricks to understand how to design and document SQL statements. The book covers all implications of SQl, T-SQL and PL/SQL and is based on the latest database releases including the explanation of how to obtain and install oracle 11g and Microsoft SQl Server 2012 (in the appendix).

Ebai divided the book in two parts. The second part is constituted on the gained knowledge in part one focusing on procedural extensions by Oracle (PL/SQL) and SQL server (programmable T-SQL). It shows you on examples and in context of business environments how you can automate processes by using functions, procedures and transactions, because time is money.

Victor Ebai´s book is a practice-oriented guideline conveying your profound knowledge and error-free example-templates, which enable you to practice what you learned from reading. Experience applied learning to become professional in SQL. The core learning outcomes are concisely summarised below:
  • Create contextual databases in the latest versions of Oracle and SQL server
  • Expert in standard SQL statements allowing you to simplify database queries based on advanced objects
  • Successful handling with complex business questions and data quality operations to eliminate corrupted data from databases
  • Functionality of SQL using PL/SQL and programmable T-SQL
  • Build and load datawarehouses cost-effectively
  • Built-functions to retrieve and transform data
  • Translate complex business rules into databases
  • Create: advanced queries to answer complex business questions, recoverable business transactions and own business focused functions
  • Manipulate data within tables and perform non-standard SQL operations
No one can question Victor’s initiative in the IT arena is empowering and shows Cameroon has the potential to become a technological power house in central Africa; view its talented, educated, and driven citizens residing domestically and in the diaspora. But yet it has so far failed to exploit these banks of potential beings: - surely as a result of a lack of leadership and vision.
