In a press statement signed by presidential media adviser Mr Reuben Abati, President Jonathan disclosed during the meeting that Nigeria is committed to resolving the crisis in Guinea Bissau under the aegis of the Economic Community of West African States and the United Nations.
'We are committed to resolving this crisis, so we will work with you, under the ECOWAS, to restore peace and democracy to Guinea Bissau', he said.
The President said the forthcoming 42nd Ordinary Session of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government would provide an opportunity to share ideas with the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Guinea Bissau.
On Monday, President Jonathan had a state house visit from Mr. Jose Ramos Horta, Special Representative of the United Nations' Secretary-General on Guinea Bissau. Mr. Jose Ramos Horta, told the President Guinea Bissau needs the assistance of Nigeria and ECOWAS as a whole to resolve the political crisis, expressing confidence in the sub-region's capacity to positively determine the future of 1.6m people of Guinea Bissau. He added, Guinea Bissau needs competent personnel in critical areas of national development.
Mr Horta, agreed to brief the leaders at the sub-regional Summit in Cote d'Ivoire and said the United Nations' Secretary-General would support the efforts of ECOWAS leaders towards solving the Guinea Bissau predicament.
