First ever Cameroon Academy Awards (SONNAH Award)

Cameroon made history on the 29th of December 2013 at the Hilton hotel, by hosting its first ever Cameroon Academy Awards, prestigiously called, the SONNAH awards . Attended by many Cameroonian celebrities and having English Cameroon fully represented, the ceremony celebrated Cameroon's talents and cultural diversity in about 23 categories, including other special awards such as lifetime achievement awards.
The night presenter on live CRTV and I

Exceeding all expectations, this was an award event to reckon with, from the red carpet moments to the awards show itself, not to forget this was live on Cameroon's national television CRTV .
Stanley Enow performing live at the SONNAH awards
So who went home with arms full of awards and the most smile on the face? The new artist Stanley Enow with his new hit single "hein pere" was well acknowledged by the Cameroon entertainment industry; sweeping the board with two awards: one for best urban artist and the other for artist with the most impact. Also scoring the most awards was the movie Ninah's dowry: best actress, best director, and best film categories all came from it.

Cameroon did not forget Africa as a whole, as the best African actor award went to the Ghanaian  most popular and achieved father of three: Van Vicker.

A big thumbs-up to Akim Macauley; CEO of the SONNAH awards for this amazing initiative and to the SONNAH team in general. From now on, Cameroon talents have a platform and benchmark on which to compete and set their targets for. It is now not only a vision, but a mission to set higher goals for the Cameroon Entertainment Industry; both in the diaspora and domestically. More pictures and winners list  after the cut....

America's first gay Imam goes public with his reasons why...

Is this really possible? A gay Imam in USA? whos is even allowed to boast openly about it...! Com'on, it is no doubt to everyone that the United State of America is the land of all possibilities, but there is a big BUT here. To the best of my knowledge, the Quran forbids homosexuality. Infact, the traditional belief in Judaism, Christianity and Islam is that God forbids homosexuality, and this translates itself into the same-sex marriages as well.

According to Linda Ikeji's blog, Imam Daayiee Abdulah originally was born and raised in Detroit as a  Christian of the Baptist faith.  But somehow while in China for further studies, he got himself converted to Islam .

So what motivated the new Islamic Daayiee Abdulah to become an Iman? the spiritual gap that existed in the Islamic faith for the lesbians, gays & transsexuals was the drive, all in the hope of providing an ideal channel of Islamic support for them, he says. More after the cut...

My remarks on my very first visit to Cote d'Ivoire, Abidjan

My very first visit in Cote d'Ivoire, Abidjan. I must say, sometimes in trips like this, it is often a reflex to feel some shame (of my country of origin really). FIRST IMPRESSION: the airport is way advanced (pictures soon). SECOND IMPRESSION: the roads: if I must say...! smooth drive no pot holes, auto-roads all over. THIRD IMPRESSION: air condition in public hospitals...SERIOUSLY...!!!! you know you have to come in contact with public places/offices to really understand the governance culture that exist in the country; well decided to pay the hopital a visit: this was the University hopital of Treichville.

The Lost Boy: Arif’s Story; As told by Alice Farmer, children's rights researcher

This photo shows two asylum-seeking boys standing on a staircase as they are detained at Belawan Immigration Detention Center in September 2012
I was disturbed by this story when reading it on http://www.hrw.org, these boys or rather children are from various nationalities; their story shows they are resilient and brave in finding their path in such  remarkable journeys alone. Read on please....

A story as told by Alice Farmer, children's rights researcher

I met Arif, a 16-year-old boy from Afghanistan, in a Pizza Hut near Jakarta, Indonesia. He dressed neatly, with his hair carefully slicked back. He held himself with confidence, dressed in a pressed, white t-shirt, but beneath the exterior I saw a boy who lived thousands of miles away from his family, who had risked his life repeatedly for safety and opportunity.

We were meeting to discuss Arif’s experiences while locked up in Indonesia’s immigration detention system. But his story began when, at 15, he borrowed $7,000 from his oldest brother, who lived in Australia, to hire smugglers to sneak him out of Afghanistan and into Indonesia. He ultimately planned to join his brother in Australia, where he hoped to claim asylum, go to school and build a new life.

Philipines destroy illegal ivory

The philippines is destroing millions of dollars worth of ivory smuggled in to the country from Africa in a bid to discourage its illegal trade. Heavy machinery began crushing the ivory in a car park on Friday.

The stockpile was built up over the last decade as customs officials seized several illegal ivory shipments.

Wildlife campaigners say there has been an increase in the illegal trade in tusks over recent years - much of it reportedly through the Philippines.

"This act is a strong statement to the rest of the World that the Philippines will not tolerate the illegal wildlife trade,"

Environment Secretary Ramon Paje was quoted as saying by the AFP news agency.

Destroying the stockpile ensures that seized ivory cannot be stolen from government warehouses and sold on the black market.

The international trade in Ivory had been banned since 1989, to protect Africa's elephant populations, some of which are endangered.

Educational: How to spot a sociopath

According to Mike Adams (2012), Sociopaths are masters are presenting themselves as heroes with high morals and philosophy, yet underneath it they are the true criminal minds in society who steal, undermine, deceive, and often incite emotional chaos among entire communities. They are masters at turning one group of people against another group while proclaiming themselves to be the one true savior. Wherever they go, they create strife, argument and hatred, yet they utterly fail to see their own role in creating it. They are delusional at so many levels that their brains defy logical reasoning.

Cameroon's ruling party wins the majority at the Senate election

A few months back I wrote a post about concerns expressed by many politicians and activists in Cameroon; on the issues surrounding the nomination of Senators. Click here to read previous post.  In Cameroon, the Senate is the upper house of the Parliament.

Even though the Senate was created in 1996 after an amendment to the constitution created the upper chamber, power to convene the Electoral College and call elections for the Senate long remained with the President of the country His Excellency Pau Biya. His Excellency Biya decided not to do so until the decree 2013/056 on 27 February 2013 was signed by him, where by the election date was set for 14 April .

President Jonathan’s ‘godfather’ Edwin Clark, 86, remarries 53-year-old

It is never too late to tie the knot right? 86-year-old Ijaw leader and former Information Minister, Edwin Clark has married popular medical doctor, Abisola Sodipe Akindeko, 53, on Sunday March 17. In honour of this, two ceremonies were organised, one at his home in Apapa and the other at the bride’s home at Okupe Estate in Maryland, online reports hold.

Recall:
Akindeko has reportedly lost two of her children Adeife and Akinola Sodipo-Akindeko  during an alleged robbery attempt on the convoy of Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello in 2003. But five years later, Akindeko told reporters that her children were not killed by armed robbers but by hired assassins whose target was Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello.“They were not armed robbers,” she said. This seemed to have been a huge story back then... Well it is good to know she has finally love again to apeace the void.
