The Lost Boy: Arif’s Story; As told by Alice Farmer, children's rights researcher

This photo shows two asylum-seeking boys standing on a staircase as they are detained at Belawan Immigration Detention Center in September 2012
I was disturbed by this story when reading it on http://www.hrw.org, these boys or rather children are from various nationalities; their story shows they are resilient and brave in finding their path in such  remarkable journeys alone. Read on please....

A story as told by Alice Farmer, children's rights researcher

I met Arif, a 16-year-old boy from Afghanistan, in a Pizza Hut near Jakarta, Indonesia. He dressed neatly, with his hair carefully slicked back. He held himself with confidence, dressed in a pressed, white t-shirt, but beneath the exterior I saw a boy who lived thousands of miles away from his family, who had risked his life repeatedly for safety and opportunity.

We were meeting to discuss Arif’s experiences while locked up in Indonesia’s immigration detention system. But his story began when, at 15, he borrowed $7,000 from his oldest brother, who lived in Australia, to hire smugglers to sneak him out of Afghanistan and into Indonesia. He ultimately planned to join his brother in Australia, where he hoped to claim asylum, go to school and build a new life.

Human parts seller caught in action

Viewer discretion is strongly advised please.

I am ashamed posting this here, but as a matter of public interest I feel compelled to for the people of Oke-Opo area in Ilesha Osun State, Nigeria.

The man in this picture holding what seem to be a dismantled human being with legs up to waist  and hands taken off; was caught in action after the police were tipped off. No doubt this was just another  day for business and was carrying his normal routine. The man whose name has not yet been disclosed was reported to be a human part seller.

This is more than a horrendous and shameless act. The desperate economic conditions in Africa, to be specific Nigeria has made a better villain out of its citizens. Why would one even do that for.....?

Unfaithful husband deforms wife's face with acid

A WOMAN whose husband threw acid in her face after she divorced him has now been forced into remarrying him again.

Nurbanu divorced her husband of 18 years eight days before he returned and threw acid in her face in Shatkhira in south west Bangladesh. She had originally ended the marriage after she found him with another woman.

According to Nurbanu account to The Huffington Post, "My husband went into hiding. After 10 months he was caught and jailed for a year,"

Nurbanu's husband spent 12 months in jail for disfiguring her. He had been on the run for ten months before authorities caught up with him, but after his release his family coerced her into re-marrying him.

"His mother paid for his release on bail," she said. "She made me sign an affidavit to have him released. She used my sons to convince me to marry him again."

The acid attack has left the 36-year-old mother with horrific facial injuries. She is now blind and unable to even prepare a meal for herself.

Nurbanu is one of thousands of women in Bangladesh who have had acid flung at them by a relative or partner due to domestic arguments, financial woes or even rejected marriage proposals.

Violence against women remains an issue, according to Monira Rahman, the CEO of the acid survivors association in Bangladesh

"Having worked with survivors of acid and petrol attacks in Bangladesh for the past 14 years, I know that violence is a major obstacle for women's ability to access their rights," Ms Rahman said.

"Until women have real equality, they will continue to not only suffer the most from poverty but also be subjected to violence."

While government efforts have seen a decline in the number of acid attacks which has fallen from 500 in 2002 to 111 in 2011, there is still more work to be done Ms Rahman said.
