Could private equity be the right answer in injecting capital into Africa..?

I stumbled on this article this morning written by Bill Hinchberger from the African Leadership Academy; and thought it was very informative but controversial at the same time - especially with the mention of Carlyle Group which is owned by two of most controversial families in US and middle East history. Adding to that are the shortcomings of Private Equity funding used as a strategy to alleviate the poor banking system of Africa. Here is what Bill Hinchberger had to say in her article. What is your take in this; is private equity really the way forward especially when the majority of firms in Africa are SMEs or small scale entrepreneurs who all compete in an informal market? Who are the private equity helping? mostly it is all subsidiaries of global companies in Africa.

According to Bill Hinchberger, Africa is growing, and African companies need cash to expand. Investors want in on the action, especially given low returns in many other parts of the world these days. But with few stocks and bonds, and scant liquidity for those out there, how do investors get a foothold? And how do African firms access much-needed cash?

61 killed and more than 200 injured in Ivory Coast

After leaving a New Year's fireworks show early Tuesday in Ivory Coast's main city, a crowd was stampeded, killing 61 people — many of them children and teenagers — and injuring more than 200, rescue workers said.

Thousands had gathered at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan's Plateau district to see the fireworks. It was only the second New Year's Eve fireworks display since peace returned to this West African nation after a bloody upheaval over presidential elections put the nation on the brink of civil war and turned this city into a battle zone.

Pastor T.B. Joshua delivers Prophecies for 2013 - about great, famous, popular rich men and politicians becoming helpless..

It is no doubt that the deluge of prophesies by popular pastors always make headlines of newspapers and tabloids especially when the incidences occur as postulated and as such, they are non-stop referenced to all through the year. So let us watch the space for what these new prophecies will amount to this new year.

The pastor of one of the fastest growing pentecostal churches in Nigeria, SCOAN – The Synagogue, Church Of All Nations, Pastor T.B Joshua ushered in the New Year with a special service at the church’s headquarters in Lagos, Nigeria. In his Prophecies for 2013, T.B Joshua said the following:

“2013 is a year of surprises. I am seeing many great, famous, popular and rich men and politicians will become helpless and in need of help in matters of sickness, disease, finances, death, etc,” he said in the service broadcast live on the popular Christian station Emmanuel TV. “One of the causes, they have failed to reward those who helped them to succeed. This is the year of judgement especially for politicians who use youth to support their political ambitions without reward after winning power.”
